The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
