The English and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
