Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
