In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without immediately provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Key developments leading up to this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
